The Counteroffer

The most challenging part of  our recruitment consultant’s role is when a candidate, who’s been unhappy in their role for months, finally gets offered their dream job, only to be swayed by a counteroffer or promotion from their current company and decides to stay!

It’s incredibly frustrating because we can see the potential for regret written all over their decision.  We want nothing more than to see them thrive and make choices that are in their best interest, not ones they’ll look back on with regret.

We’ll likely hear from them in six months, back in the job market, frustrated that nothing really changed and totally gutted they missed out on the dream job in the first place!

So, when faced with a counteroffer, we urge you to consider these key points:

Remember Why You Wanted to Leave.
There was a reason you were ready to move on. Don’t let a last-minute offer distract you from the issues that drove you to seek something new.

Real Recognition Isn’t Reactive.
If your current employer truly valued you, they wouldn’t wait until you were walking out the door to show appreciation. True recognition comes before the ultimatum, not after.

Focus on Your Long-Term Goals.
Staying might feel comfortable in the short term, but will it really help you grow? Or are you just delaying the inevitable?

Think Beyond the Immediate Perks.
A counteroffer might come with attractive perks, but does it align with where you see yourself in the future? Will it bring you the fulfillment you deserve?

This decision isn’t just about a job—it’s about your future, your happiness, and your career growth. Make the right choice, not just for now, but for the long haul.
